The Monterey Museum of Art’s summer season, The Art of Place, traces more than a century of art rooted in the Peninsula’s light and land across four exhibitions, anchored by Mary DeNeale: Doyenne of the Carmel Art Colony, on view through August 16, 2026.

Housed in a quiet wing of Sunset Center, the Center for Photographic Art carries the lineage of Group f/64, the Westons, and Ansel Adams’s Friends of Photography — and still keeps a working darkroom behind the gallery walls.

On August 8, 1927, nineteen artists gathered at a cottage called Gray Gables and founded what became the oldest continuously operating gallery in Carmel. One year from its centennial, the cooperative spirit endures on Dolores Street.
